Case Study

In refrigeration systems, particularly those using A2L refrigerants like R454A, early detection of leaks is vital. A2L Refrigerants, which are slightly flammable, can pose serious safety risks to personnel and equipment if not properly monitored. Reliable gas detection ensures that leaks are identified promptly, protecting both people and assets while maintaining compliance with health and safety standards. This is especially important in rigorous testing environments where extreme temperatures push equipment to their limits.

Safety in Extreme Testing Environments

A global leader in transport refrigeration systems used in trucks, trailers, refrigerated containers, and buses takes product reliability seriously. Their R&D team conducts testing that replicates the most extreme temperatures on earth, from -40°C Arctic conditions to +50°C summer heat, to guarantee their units perform flawlessly no matter the environment.

The use of R454A refrigerant gas in these tests, while essential, poses a potential hazard if leaked. To protect personnel, gas detectors were installed internally and externally around the testing areas, providing comprehensive coverage and early leak detection.

Testing conditions required a gas detector that could withstand extreme temperature fluctuations without compromising performance. The specific gas, R454A, further limited detector options on the market. The primary goal was clear: ensure employee safety through reliable early detection of leaks, with minimal false alarms and low maintenance costs.

Why the Smart 3G-D2 from Sensitron?

Working alongside OBW Technologies, one of our channel partners in Ireland, the client chose the Smart 3G-D2 from Sensitron (part of the Crowcon group) for its unmatched specification and proven performance at temperatures as low as –40°C. Though the Smart 3G-D2 was officially specified for R454B gas, extensive testing by OBW and the client confirmed it reliably detected R454A due to the gases’ similar properties, giving full confidence in both detection accuracy and detector durability.

Since installation, the Smart 3G-D2 detectors have operated continuously through extreme temperature cycles without failures or false alarms. This reliability has significantly reduced maintenance interventions, enabling the R&D team to focus fully on testing rather than equipment troubleshooting. Early detection of R454A leaks has ensured personnel safety throughout every phase of rigorous product testing, allowing uninterrupted operations and compliance with strict safety standards. Encouraged by these results, the client is rolling out the Sensitron detectors to additional test areas, planning a phased site-wide implementation as the facility grows.

“The Smart 3G-D2 not only met the customer’s –40°C operating temperature requirements but has also proven exceptionally reliable in day-to-day use. Since installation, they’ve seen fewer false alarms and reduced maintenance downtime, which is critical when their focus is on rigorous product testing. The quality and performance of the Smart 3G-D2 truly make it stand out.”
